Modern trams are fast public transport modes with high capacity, positioned between metro lines and regular buses. Compared with buses, trams are faster with a top speed of 70 kilometer per hour, and one tramcar can hold about 300 to 500 passengers. Other benefits of trams are their energy efficiency, safety and low cost.

The tram network in Suzhou New District will include six lines with a total length of about 80 kilometers. Tram Line 1 will be 18 kilometers long with a total investment of 3.1 billion yuan (US$ 490 million). It will connect the regions of central Suzhou New District to the ecological area at the west.

It’s expected to be put into use by early 2015.
